Michael John Arnold
May 25, 1951 - May 3, 2018

HARRISVILLE, New York ~ Michael J. Arnold, 66, of Maple Street, Harrisville, died on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, following complications from heart surgery.

Born on May 25, 1951, in West Carthage, New York, the eldest of the five children of Francis and Barbara (McMahon) Arnold, he graduated from Harrisville Central School in 1970.

Next, he attended Canton ATC and later enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 12, 1971.  He served with the Communications Company, 3rd Marine Division, until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on July 16, 1973.

Shortly after completing his military service, he went to work at Fort Drum, holding a variety of positions in various departments over the years including that of heavy equipment operator in the base’s Department of Public Works, the position he still held at the time of his death.  On October 8, 1994, he married Tammy R. Gibbs at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville.  A life-long communicant of St. Francis Solanus Church, he, later, joined the Black River American Legion.

An avid outdoors man, Mike loved camping and working outside around his home.  A perpetual New York Yankees fan, he, also, loved the New York Giants and enjoyed attending Red and Black Football games.  None of his favorite pastimes, however, compared to the enjoyment he experienced watching his daughter play soccer during her high school years or going out to a movie and then to dinner with his wife and daughter.  He wore the ever-present pride and love he had for his daughter, Elizabeth, on his sleeve as was evident every time he found himself in a conversation with anyone about her.

Survivors besides his wife, Tammy, include his daughter, Elizabeth R. Arnold, of Harrisville; three brothers, Patrick (Patricia) Arnold, of Camillus, New York, Paul Arnold, of Maryland, and Thomas (Kelly) Arnold, of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister, Judy (Bruce) St. Lawrence, of Middlesex, New York; his mother- and step-father-in-law, Loretta and Paul McDermid, of Deer River; and his father-in-law, Dayton Gibbs, of Carthage; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was predeceased by his parents.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State Street, Harrisville.  Mike’s funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018, beginning with an 11:15 a.m. family Prayer Service at the funeral home followed by a 12 Noon Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Solanus Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating.  A private burial will follow in St. Francis Solanus Cemetery, Harrisville, at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to St. Francis Solanus Church, Harrisville.
