Jane M. Axtell

Port Leyden— Jane M. (Croneiser) Axtell, 91, a former longtime resident of East Main Street, Port Leyden, and widow of Earl, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter and son in law, Janette and John Carpenter, on Friday, November 13, 2020, while under the loving care of her family and hospice.

Jane was born in Constableville, on April 11, 1929, to William Joseph and Elizabeth Agnes (Cavanaugh) Croneiser.  While in high school, she enjoyed playing basketball and cheerleading.  After graduating from Port Leyden High School with the Class of 1946, she continued her education at the Utica School of Commerce.  Next, she worked as a secretary for the Gould Paper Mill in Lyons Falls. After raising her five daughters, Jane worked as a secretary for many years at the Lewis County Livestock Market in Lowville.

On August 10, 1949, Jane married Earl Axtell at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Port Leyden.  Following their wedding, they purchased a farm on State Route 26 near Turin.  Later, they bought a farm on Route 12D, Boonville.  After retiring, they made their home in Port Leyden.  Then, after her husband died, Jane resided at The Terrace at Woodland Assisted Living Community, Rome, New York.

A member of St. Martin’s Church, Port Leyden, Jane, regularly, attended Mass.  In addition, she enjoyed spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens, not to mention sitting on the Election Board.  Proud of her Irish heritage, she was, always, on the lookout for leprechauns.  Moreover, she loved spending time with her family, and she enjoyed the many gatherings at their camp.  She, also, loved music and dancing with Earl. 

Jane was predeceased by Earl, her loving husband of 68 years.  Jane is survived by five daughters:  Bonnie (Jim) Easton, of Lyons Falls, Janette (John) Carpenter, of Boonville, Beth Axtell, of Ravena, Jean (Dean) Bissell, of Voorheesville, and Mary (Joe) Legnetto, of Syracuse; as well as by many grandchildren:  Brittany Axtell; Brianna and Clarke Bissell; Brad (Jennifer), Robert (Jessica), and Chad Carpenter; Scott, Rebecca, Stefan, and Catie Howanietz; Bailee and Kaylee Legnetto; and Kristin (James) VanAlstine; sixteen great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Willis (Sharon Baker) Croneiser; as well as by many nieces and nephews.  Besides her husband, Earl, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Lindsey Legnetto; her parents, William Joseph and Elizabeth Agnes (Cavanaugh) Croneiser; her brothers:  Earl, Bert, Alvin, and Raymond Croneiser; her sisters:  Marion, Olive Rudd, and Sister Agnes William, a.k.a. Rita.

A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Martin’s Church, Port Leyden, with Rev. Lawrence Marullo, pastor, officiating.  Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden.  Calling hours are scheduled for Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Please wear a facial covering.  Social distancing and contact tracing will be observed at the funeral home and at St. Martin's church.  Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Cemetery, P.O.
