Santo "Sam" J. D'Ambrosi
June 1, 1928 ~ February 23, 2014 (age 85)

TURIN – Santo J. “Sam” D’Ambrosi, 85, of NYS Route 26, died Sunday morning, February 23, 2014, at the Lewis County General Hospital after a short illness.

A son of the late Angelo and Nazarena Montova D’Ambrosi, Sam was born in Rome, New York, on June 1, 1928.  In 1946, he joined the Army while still in school, serving in Japan at the end of World War II.  After returning home, he graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1948.  He, then, worked for ROAMA at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome before moving to Turin where he met his loving wife.  Sam and Joanne married on June 11, 1966, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Houseville.  For twelve years, he and Joanne owned and operated a popular establishment in Turin, The Crossroads.  Next, Sam worked at Kraft Foods in Lowville, New York, for sixteen years before retiring.

Sam played an active role in his community.  A communicant of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Houseville, a past EMT for the Turin Volunteer Fire Department, a ski patrolman for Snow Ridge for over thirty years, a former village trustee for the Village of Turin, a member of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, Lowville VFW, a member of the South Lewis K of C, a former member of BPOE #1605, Lowville Lodge, he enjoyed the outdoors, canoeing in the Adirondacks, skiing, golfing, playing tennis and racquetball, and camping.  In addition, he enjoyed photography, cameras, and antiques, which he collected. In addition, he took great pride in his wife, children, and grandchildren.  Sam will be remembered for his beautiful smile, generosity, perpetual happiness, and kindness to all.

He is survived by his loving partner in life for over 47 years, Joanne; a son, Patrick D’Ambrosi, and his companion, Lynnette Parker, and her two sons, Ethan and Jarrett, of Turin; a daughter, Kristiane, and her husband, John Bauer, of Marcy, New York; a brother, Angelo D’Ambrosi, and his wife, Vincenza, of Rome; a sister, Rose Shoemaker, of Rome; and two grandchildren, Courtney D’Ambrosi and Evan Bauer; as well as by several nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his sister and two brothers-in-law, Jean and Herbert Jeror and Ronald Shoemaker.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Houseville, with Rev. Christopher Carrara officiating.  Calling hours will are scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville.  A spring burial with military honors will follow in the Old Glendale Cemetery.  Per the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Parish Office, 5457 Shady Avenue, Lowville, New York 13367; or to the Lewis County General Hospital Dialysis Fund, 7785 North State Street, Lowville, New York 13367 or to the Lewis County General Hospital Palliative Care Unit, 7785 North State Street, Lowville, New York 13367.
