Lorene Olson Davey
March 18, 1954 - May 17, 2017

Lorene Olson Davey, born to the late Conradine Rose Mackenzie and Fredrick W. Olson on March 18, 1954, in Jacksonville, Florida, passed peacefully to rest on May 17, 2017, in her home.

After graduating from Mayville Central School in 1972, Lorene earned an Associates in Applied Science in Nursing Degree from Jamestown Community College.  Since then, her love for her work as a nurse and her passion for helping people grew only stronger over time.

Looking for adventure as a nurse, Lorene relocated to Pensacola, Florida.  There, she met her husband, Derek MacLean Davey.  They wed on March 31, 1979, on the Pensacola Naval Air Station.  Here, her late son, Seamus MacLean Davey, was born.  Derek’s military duty led them to Washington, North Carolina, and finally back to New York.  In 2011, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Utica with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.  Constantly striving to perfect her nursing skills, she attended many seminars and courses and even took a trip to Brazil during her time at SUNY Utica.  Moreover, during this time, they raised their four children, and she continued working as an RN until she retired in April 2017.

Lorene lived for her children and eventually her five grandchildren.  Nothing brought her more joy than traveling around the world to see them whenever possible.  In 2005, she became a Gold Star Mother.  Born to be a grandmother, she looked forward to retiring so she could be a full-time Mimi.

Lorene's devotion to helping others, to aiding and supporting children, to living and maintaining an active arduous lifestyle was always on display throughout her life.  She became involved with lifeguarding, the Boy Scouts, and the Girl Scouts; she taught Sunday school and confirmation classes; she worked with Habitat for Humanity; and she coached numerous Odyssey of the Mind teams.  Moreover, she enjoyed running and swimming, leading her to complete many triathlons into her 50s.  An active advocate of Organ Donation, she spread awareness of the program throughout all of northern and central New York State.

Lorene is survived by her husband, Derek M. Davey, of Lowville; their children, Shiloh (Ryan) Mackey, Brittany (Andreas) Bedernik, and Austin (Jamie) Byrd; their grandchildren, Piper and Evelyn Mackey, Cullen and Alexander Bedernik, and Maddox Byrd; her step-mother, Terry Olson; and her mother-in-law, Marget Davey; as well as by numerous siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and an amazing extended family.  Lorene had a love and energy for life that touched everyone around her.

Calling hours will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Sundquist Funeral Home in Lowville, on Saturday, May 20, 2017.  A funeral service will follow at the Lowville First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at 1:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to Double Play Sports in Lowville, New York, at: Double Play, 7394 Utica Blvd., Lowville, New York 13367 or at http://doubleplaycc.com.

Passionate about helping others, Lorene loved children. Thankful for and giving to her community, she, always, lived a healthy and active lifestyle.
