James H. Duffy
February 3, 1934 - January 29, 2019

Born in Lowville, New York, on February 3, 1934, to the late William C. and Phyllis Rofinot Duffy, James H. Duffy passed away peacefully in his home on January 29, 2019, after a long illness.

Following graduation from Princeton and Harvard Law School, he spent his legal career at Cravath, Swaine, and Moore, retiring from there as a partner.  He and his late wife, Martha, spent many Septembers in Venice where he wrote one of his Reuben Frost series of mystery novels under the pseudonym Haughton Murphy.  Throughout his life, he enthusiastically supported numerous arts organizations and civic projects.

His brother, John, predeceased him. He is survived by his longtime companion Sophia Schachter, his brother, Joseph (Ann), and the many nieces and nephews in whom he took great pride and pleasure – Margaret, Elizabeth, Caitlin, Patrick, Kate, Lillian, Caroline, and Tim and his great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Park Avenue and 83rd Street, New York, New York, on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 3:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the School of American Ballet, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York City 10023, or to the Baryshnikov Arts Center, 450 West 37th Street, Suite 501, New York City 10018.
