Shirley B. (Blade) Higby
December 3, 1926 ~ April 24, 2019 (age 92)

Greig, New York— Shirley Blade Higby, of the Greig Road, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility where she had resided since December 20, 2018.

Born on December 3, 1926, to Gifford and Arlene Blade, she is survived by her daughter, Judy (Phillip) DeLong, and Lyndon (Mary Ann Gaebel) Higby, and daughter-in-Law, Linda (Gaebel) Higby, wife of Burton B. Higby, eight grandchildren and many, many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dean Alfred Higby, on February 21, 2009; a son, Burton B. Higby, on August 15, 2006; her mother and father, Arlene and Gifford Blade; and her sisters, Yvonne Powlin and Phyllis Garnsey.

In her youth, Shirley attended Lowville and Carthage schools, graduating from Carthage High School in June of 1944.  Then, on June 30, 1944, she married Dean Alfred Higby near Pine Camp (now Fort Drum).  In 1952, Shirley and Dean purchased the Jordan potato farm on the Greig Road where they raised their family.  Shirley continued living there for over sixty-seven years before taking up residence in the Lewis County Extended Care Facility.

Both Shirley and Dean drove buses for the General Martin (Glenfield) and the South Lewis Schools Districts (Turin) for many, many years.  Before becoming a bus driver, however, Shirley worked at Beaverite in Glenfield.  In addition, she served as a tax collector for the Town of Greig for many years.  An avid bowler in her younger years, she could compete with the best of them.

In 1964, Dean and Shirley purchased a camp on Stony Lake which they enjoyed for forty-five years.  Moreover, through the lake they form a relationship with the Gaebel/Thesier clan that, also, had a camp on Stony Lake.  Sterling and Margaret Rose (Thesier) Gaebel became mother- and father-in-law of Lyndon and Burt who married the Gaebel girls through the “Lake Connection.”

Calling hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the Iseneker Funeral Home, 5702 Waters Road, Lowville, New York 13367 with the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the funeral home with Reverend James Jenkins officiating followed by the burial in the Old Glendale Cemetery.  After the services, a gathering will follow at the Calvary Bible Church fellowship hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Glenfield Fire Dept, and the Glendale Cemetery Association.
