Kenton L. Hoppel
May 18, 1953 – September 4, 2018

Kenton L. "Kent" Hoppel, 65, of West Valley, New York, died on Tuesday September 4, 2018, at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska.

A son of the late Kenneth and Arletha (née Stiles) Hoppel, he was born on May 18, 1953, in Lowville, New York.  A graduate of Beaver River Central School, he went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Communications from Alfred State College.  From 1975 until he retired in 2008, Kent worked as an Audio-Visual Technician at the Springville Griffith Institute and Central School District.  Moreover, he coached several sports in his early years at SGI and enjoyed many years of working on high school musicals.

An active member of the West Valley Volunteer Hose Company for nearly four decades, Kent received the Fireman of the Year Award in 2002 and served as president in 2012.  A dedicated EMT for over thirty-five years as well a member of the NYS Volunteer Fire Police Association, he was recognized by the Cattaraugus County Volunteer Firefighter Association and the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen of New York State for his years of service.  In addition, he, often, assisted with audio-visual needs throughout the communities of Springville and West Valley including with the League for the Handicapped, Inc.  Moreover, he enjoyed volunteer service with the Future Farmers of America and the Boy Scouts of America as well.  In West Valley, he belonged to St. Paul's United Methodist Church.  In his free time, he, especially, liked spending time with his grandsons, traveling, fishing, woodworking, and restoring vintage cars.

Kent is survived by his wife – Rhonda; a daughter – Krista (Brad) Frank, of West Valley; a son – Adam (Molly) Hoppel, of Hornell; two grandsons – Henry and Jacob Frank; and his siblings – Nancy Brown, of Lowville, Kay Manzer, of Castorland, New York, Rayta (James) Russell, of Lowville, Wayne (Ellen) Hoppel, of Castorland, Vanessa (Michael) Monnat, of Castorland; as well as by several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Tuesday, September 18, 2018, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, 271 East Main Street, Springville.  A Celebration of Kent’s Life will be held Wednesday, September 19, 2018, in the West Valley Memorial Hall at 4:00 p.m.  There will also be a Memorial Service on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. in the Beaver Valley United Methodist Church in Naumberg, New York.
