Mafalda “Mae” Dileta Lorenzini Howley
September 25, 1913 - November 08, 2012

LOWVILLE – Surrounded by her loving family and the wonderful staff of the fourth Floor, Mafalda “Mae” Dileta Lorenzini Howley, 99, passed away on Thursday, November 08, 2012, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

Mae, a daughter of Giuseppe and Giovanna Lorenzini, was born in Betula, Pennsylvania, on September 25, 1913.  After moving to Lewis County, she attended Lowville Free Academy and the Banford Academy Beauty School, New York City, graduating in 1932.  She was, then, employed by Ethel’s Beauty Shop in Lowville.  On October 15, 1932, she married William J. Howley at St. Mary’s Rectory in Glenfield with Rev. George Brison officiating.  With her husband, she owned and operated the Central Hotel from 1938 to 1962 and the Timber Lodge, both in Glenfield, from 1952 to 1976.  Moreover, during the 1970s, she worked in the library at St. Peter’s Catholic School in Lowville.

Mrs. Howley was a member and communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glenfield.  She loved dancing with her husband of sixty-seven years.  An avid bowler, she, also, belonged to a league at Lewis Lanes.  A fan of Tiger Woods as well, she played golf herself and enjoyed reading and solving crossword puzzles.

Surviving Mae are her children:  Joan C. Whalen, of Goodyear, Arizona, Michael D. and Susan Howley, of Chandler, Arizona, Judith (McLaughlin) Marmon, and her husband, Bill, of Port Leyden, Bethany M. Hoffman, of Massena, and Anne Howley-O’Brien, of Richland, Michigan; her daughter-in-law, Carol Howley, of  Elmira and Brantingham; her sisters-in-law, Ellen Lorenzini, of Brantingham, and Lea Howley, of Oswego; twenty-nine grandchildren; forty-nine great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Bill, who died in 1999, Mrs. Howley was predeceased by her sons, Philip W. and Joseph, who died in infancy; three sons-in-law:  Dominic “Bud” Whalen, Dr. J.C. “Charlie’ McLaughlin, and Leonard Hoffman; her three sisters:  Theresa Ely, Angeline Meda MacKeller, and Margaret Burdick; four brothers:  Anthony, Floriano, Hector, and Virgil Lorenzini; and a great-grandson, Andy Whalen, of Hawaii.

A funeral mass will be offered on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at 11:00AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville with Rev. Christopher Carrara officiating.  Burial will follow in the Old Glendale Cemetery.  Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, November 16, 2012, at the Sundquist Funeral Home.  A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM.
