Betty Dianne Hoppe Kohler
June 22, 1938 - November 25, 2018

CROGHAN, New York ~ Betty D. Kohler, 80, of Main Street, Croghan, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 24, 2018, in the Emergency Room at the Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she had been admitted earlier.

Born on June 22, 1938, in the Town of New Bremen, to Roland A. and Alice (Luther) Hoppe, she graduated from Watertown High School with the Class of 1956.  She, then, attended the State University of New York (SUNY) Oneonta where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1960.  On June 30, 1962, she married Frederick J. Kohler at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.

Betty began her teaching career teaching Home Economics in the Port Leyden schools where she, also, coached the Port Leyden Cheerleading Squad.  Later, she taught n Lowville and then at Clifton Fine schools where she served as an advisor to the school's FHA program.  Eventually, she became a long-term substitute teacher at Beaver River Central School for several years.  During the late 1960s and early 1970s, she worked as a supervisor of caseworkers for the Lewis County Department of Social Services, and later, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant working for the Lewis County Extended Care Facility in Lowville.  In her final job, she worked as a traveling Nursing Assistant for Upjohn Healthcare and US Care Systems, compassionately and always with special kindness, taking care of hospice patients throughout the area.  In 2000, she retired from US Care Systems.

Throughout her life, Betty had many interests and enjoyed many hobbies, including traveling, watching movies, making crafts, and tending to her beloved animals.

A communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, she is survived by Frederick, her husband of fifty-six years of Croghan; three children, her son, Anthony J., and his wife, Anne Kohler, of Canandaigua, New York, and two daughters, Anne-Marie E. Kohler, of Canastota, New York, and Alicia C. Kohler, of Watertown, New York; a brother, Lt. Col. Darrell R. and wife, Mary Hoppe, Ret., of Nashua, New Hampshire; three grandchildren:  Amanda L. (Steven) Bain, of Canastota, Colby R. King, of Watertown, and Kati L. King, of Canandaigua; and a great granddaughter, Kali A. Bates, of Canandaigua; as well as by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was predeceased by a brother, Gary A. Hoppe, and a sister, Susan M. Nier.

Betty’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.  Calling hours are scheduled for Wednesday, November 28, 2018, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorial donations may be made to Jefferson County Hospice or to the Lewis County SPCA.
