Mary Cynthia (Ross) Rice
January 16, 1933 ~ January 8, 2021 (age 87)

LOWVILLE—Mary Cynthia Rice, 87, of the Rice Road, Lowville, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021, at the Lewis County General Hospital.

The youngest of the ten children of the late Orrin F. and Ella Evans Ross, Cynthia was born on January 16, 1933, in Lowville, New York.  Salutatorian of the Lowville Academy and Central School (LACS) Class of 1950, she, later, completed her bachelor’s degree at Cornell University in 1954.  On April 24, 1954, she married Arleigh D. Rice at the Lowville United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Williams officiating.  After their wedding, she and Arleigh moved overseas while he fulfilled his military service in Germany.  After returning from Germany in 1956, they purchased the family farm and operated it as the Windloc Farms for forty-eight years, the last twenty-five in partnership with their son, Paul.  Active in many organizations throughout her adolesce, she participated in 4H and cooperative extension as well as in other farm related organizations.  Cynthia, also, taught at LACS and at other surrounding schools from 1956 to 1962.

Cynthia became an integral and stable figure on the farm and in the household, allowing family members to engage in endeavors on and off the farm.  Besides her children, one of her proudest moments came when she was honored with the New York State Farm Family Award in 1990.

Her survivors include her five children and their spouses: Sara and James Cronin, of Brighton, Paul and Donna Rice, of Lowville; John and Maria Rice, of Liverpool; Dean and Lori Rice, of Johnstown, and Andrew and Robin Rice, of Canandaigua; a brother and his wife, John H. and Anne Ross, of Lowville; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a brother- and sister-in-law, Dr. L. Paul and Sandy Rice, of Saratoga Springs; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Arleigh, who passed in October 2020, and Mark Alan Rice, who passed at birth.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service.  A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in West Lowville Rural Cemetery in the spring.  In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Arrangements are with the Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
