Nelson L. Roes
January 10, 1930 ~ November 22, 2020 (age 90)

CROGHAN – Nelson L. Roes, 90, formerly of George Street, Croghan, died Sunday morning, November 22, 2020, at the Sunset Nursing Home, Boonville.

Nelson was born on January 10, 1930, in Depew, New York, to the late Samuel and Ellen “Lena” Nafziger Roes.  He attended country school on the West Road and Lowville Academy while working on area farms.  On June 9, 1950, he married Mary W. Nafziger at the Dadville Mennonite Church with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating.  Together he and his wife purchased a dairy farm in Denmark, which they operated for six years before moving to Castorland where Nelson worked for Climax Manufacturing.  Then, he started a small farm equipment dealership at their home in Castorland but eventually moved the business to Route 26 in Lowville where he built the Roes Equipment Company which he operated until the early 1980s.  Nelson and Mary lived in Castorland for 57 years before moving to Steepleview Courts in Croghan on May 1, 2014.

A charter member of the Naumburg Mennonite Church, Nelson had, at one time, served as Bible school superintendent and as a member of the Naumburg Mennonite Church Council.  In addition, as Chairman of the Sonlight Missions in Haiti, he had, actively, done mission work there since the mid-1960s, having made well over 150 mission trips to Haiti.  Otherwise, he loved to watch birds and put jigsaw puzzles together.  Moreover, he enjoyed playing card games and watching his family playing ball.

He is survived by Mary, his wife of seventy years; his children and their spouses:  Virginia and Nevin Moser, David and Marcia Roes, Dale and Connie Roes, all of Lowville, Dannie and Yvonne Roes, of Castorland, Jane and Harold Yoder, of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, and Darwin and Lori Roes, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; nineteen grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives:  Vernon and Doreen Roes, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Leonard and Judy Roes, of Lowville, Melvin and Judy Roes, also of Lowville; three sisters and their husbands, Irene and Alvin Zehr, of Castorland, Alice and Alvin Roggie, of Castorland, and Nancy and Marvin Widrick, of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Roes, of Michigan; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He is predeceased by four brothers and sisters-in-law:  Edward and Bertha Roes, Maurice and Rosella Roes, Lloyd and Clara Roes, and Raymond and Anna Mae Roes; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Mae and Grant Noftsier and Edna and Elmer Yousey.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at the Naumburg Mennonite Church with Pastors Titus Mast, Myron Roggie, and Greg Widrick officiating.  No calling hours have been scheduled.  An opportunity for viewing will be provided as attendees leave the church before the graveside service at the Naumburg Mennonite Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sonlight Missions, P.O. Box 51, Castorland, New York 13620.  Arrangements are with the Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
