Under the care of his family and Lewis County Hospice, James B. West, 81, of Blue Street, died Saturday morning, January 25, 2014, at his home.

James was born on June 21, 1932, in Hancock, New York, to the late John "Jack" and Evangeline Burns West.  After his family moved to Lyons Falls, he attended and then graduated from Lyons Falls High School.  Next, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. On October 13, 1956, he married Lois Ramsey at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glenfield with Father Charles Flaherty officiating.  He spent much of his adult life working with his father building homes before taking over the family business in his own right.

In addition, Mr. West participated in several organizations in his local community.  A communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glenfield, a member of the Lowville American Legion Post #162 and of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, VFW, a longtime Boy Scout leader and a member of the Boonville Elks Lodge, he, also, served with the 3G Fire Department for many years.

When not working, Jim liked hunting and spending time at his hunting camp.  Years ago, he and Lois enjoyed snowmobiling.  For many years, they spent their summers at Sand Pond and their winters in St. Augustine, Florida.  Most of all, however, he relished spending time with his granddaughter.

He is survived by Lois, his wife of over fifty-seven years; two sons, John and Walter West and John’s daughter, McKayla, all of Glenfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John "Jack" and Margaret West, of Sand Pond, and Richard and Helen West, of Radisson, New York; and an aunt; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He is predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Eden Goodhines.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Glenfield, with Rev. Christopher Carrara, Pastor, officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will take place in Old Glendale Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Lowville.
